This is the 2006 updated version of the book which first appeared in 1989 under the Longman Scientific and Technical imprint as part of Pearson Education. The book was inspired by the fact that the centenaries of both Alfred Barnard's "The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom" and Nettleton's slightly later work on distilling ("The Manufacture of Spirit as Concluded at the Various Distilleries in the United Kingdom" published in 1893) were both looming at the time. For that reason alone it deserves a place in our Whisky Library. But be warned, this is not an easy read. However, it is a comprehensive assessment of the whisky industry world-wide (and therefore differs significantly from Barnard and Nettleton who were concerned with distilling within the UK only). The list of contributors is impressive although, disappointingly, there is none from Ireland but, curiously, no less than three from the Finnish State Alcohol Company. The contents cover the entire range of activities within the industry from the selection of raw materials to delivery of the end product in the bottle. The two chapters on the importance of maturation are particularly enlightening although in parts heavy in scientific text, and there are non-core chapters on energy management and by-products. This book is digitally printed on demand and so allow a little extra time for delivery.
