In his lifetime, the best-selling whisky writer in the world put it all into perspective in this handsome volume, with contributions from other established writers in the field. Whilst Michael’s love of Scotch can never be put in doubt he manages to make it more a first amongst equals in this book, rather than the dominant world player it so clearly is commercially. Nevertheless, just over half the pages on the producing countries are devoted to Scotch and the smaller half to the whiskies from the rest of the world. Despite its undoubted authority, the World Guide does contain some minor errors. For instance, as one of the distilleries within a distillery, Kinclaith is attributed to Caledonian, when, in fact, it belonged to Strathclyde on the other side of the country. If anyone is updating this volume now that Michael has joined the Great Distiller in the sky, the correction of such errors would be a just tribute to all that he did to spread the knowledge of whisky far and wide. Published in 2005 by Dorling Kindersley. Hardback. 288 pages. A free download of the chapter on Saucel Distillery is available when buying this book.
