The Barnard and Morrice books

Knowledge and whisky go together.  Become a whisky connoisseur based on the epic journeys of Barnard (1885-86) and Morrice (1985-86) when they visited every registered distillery in Scotland and Ireland and partook of the product on the premises. Their respective books, “The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom” (by Alfred Barnard and published in 1887) and “The Distilleries of Scotland and Ireland” (by Philip Morrice and published in 1987) are both extremely rare. Yet these two books - now being updated by the second author - give unique snapshots of the state of the whisky distilling industries, 100 years apart, and delightful thumbnail sketches of the individual distilleries, the whisky they produced and the people working in them.

Whisky Journeys enables you to download the entries in the two books for the distilleries producing your favourite whiskies, as well as those which are less well known or which have since ceased production, with updates since the books were published. We also give you the opportunity of purchasing direct from Whisky Journeys selected bottlings of those whiskies for delivery to your designated address anywhere in the world (where permitted).

Of the 160 distilleries visited by Barnard, 58 in Scotland, 26 in Ireland and the four in England had all disappeared by the time Morrice made his commemorative journey 100 years later, when he visited the 72 that had survived, adding 51 “new” distilleries built in Scotland during the intervening century.  For each of the 72 distilleries visited by both authors you may download combined extracts from the two volumes and make comparisons as to how the distillery appeared when Barnard made his epic journey in 1885-86 and how Morrice perceived it 100 years later. There are also up-dates by the second author, Philip Morrice, of these and of all the other 139 distilleries appearing in the two books. In addition, we include those distilleries built post-Barnard but which had disappeared by the time Morrice made his journey and those which have appeared since 1987.

The Great Whisky Journeys experience, embracing a total of 211 distilleries visited by Barnard and/or Morrice plus the ones which came and went between 1887 and 1987 and those appearing post-1987, unfolds through 12 itineraries, beginning with Itinerary I which covers the Glasgow area.

Separately, by accessing our on-line Whisky Cave, you can order from an extensive selection of bottlings of the whiskies (some of them very rare) from many of the distilleries, and from our on-line Whisky Library, books about whisky including those associated with  particular distilleries or companies.

The cultured, civilised world and its passion for living luxuriously, but in an informed way, is increasingly adopting whisky  – and above all Scotch single malt – as its drink of choice. This is not only because it is a product of fine distinction and great heritage, but also a means of entering a world of diverse taste and almost infinite choice. How much more satisfying to understand the wealth of knowledge that surrounds malt whisky so as to select and imbibe on an informed basis.

Malt whisky, like all spirits, is the fruit of the ancient craft of distilling. It therefore owes its character in every aspect -  be it taste, nose, body, strength or colour – to the workings of a particular distillery and the men and women who inhabit it. The advent of mass markets, branding and advertising saw the product separate from its origins and the distinctiveness of individual single whiskies become lost in a sea of commerce. The tide has turned and the thirst for knowledge and identity surrounding the world’s most enduring, noble spirit has ensured that the basic production unit, i.e. the distillery, is once more at the centre of attention.
Here we provide the means of understanding why each distillery is unique through a combination of history and production features peculiar to that distillery. And we enable you to build up an extensive collection of whiskies from those distilleries and to create your own library of whisky literature by ordering directly from our suppliers through a single web site. This will be achieved progressively through 12 individual whisky journeys which will be added to the web site periodically so that the information and choices can be received, absorbed and enjoyed in an orderly manner. Journey I covers the Glasgow area. Journey 2 will be added shortly and deals with Campbeltown (and includes for the first time the Island of Arran).

Nowhere else can you systematically acquire this knowledge and insight into the world of whisky and at the same time access such a range of the very whiskies themselves at reasonable market prices, as well as create your own library of whisky literature.
